1. Condensation of triacetoneamine with thiophene aldehyde and its derivatives in the presence of base gave 3-mono and 3,5-bis-thienylidene-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidones. 2. 2,2,6,6-Tetramethyl-3 (2-thienylidene)-4-piperidone did not add butyl lithium at the carbonyl group but was metallated at the 5-position of the thiophene ring. In the case of reaction of 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-5 (2-thienylidene)-piperidine-3,5-dione with butyl lithium both metallation and 1,4-addition at the conjugated C=O group were observed.
