Abstract:
The kinetics and thermodynamics of the cationic polymerization of alkyl derivatives of laevoglucosan have been investigated in some detail, mainly for one heterocyclic monomer, 2,3,4-tri-O-methyllaevoglucosan. The process was found to be characterized by an induction period followed by stationary conditions up to advanced degrees of conversion of the monomer. Conversion dependences plotted with semi logarithmic coordinates show deviations from linearity affecting portions of the curves relating to the final stage of polymerization. This points to a possibility that deactivation of growing particles may occur during the polymerization process.
