Abstract:
1. 3-Chloropropyl and 4-chlorobutyl alkyl (phenyl) sulfones have been obtained with high yields as a result of the oxidative chlorination of 3-hydroxypropyl and 4-hydroxybutyl alkyl (phenyl) sulfides. In the presence of FeCl3 (and other salts of metals) the oxidative chlorination can be stopped at the formation of the corresponding sulfoxides. 2. The OH group of the original compound is directly involved in the formation of the sulfonyl group. A possible mechanism for the oxidative chlorination of hydroxyalkyl sulfides and sulfoxides has been considered.
