1. The structural and steric direction of the diene condensation of piperylene with acrylic acid and its methyl ester was studied using the method of capillary chromatography. 2. The reaction studied is characterized by a high degree of structural directedness, whereas its steric direction is considerably less pronounced. The reaction proceeds predominantly according to an endo-addition scheme, the proportion of which decreases with increasing temperature. 3. Increasing the temperature changes both the structural and the steric direction of the reactions studied; moreover, these changes are greater, the higher the polarity of the activating group of the dienophile. 4. The structural and steric direction of reactions of trans-piperylene with acrylic acid and its ester is determined by electronic factors, which overlap the influence of the steric factors.
