Abstract: 1-Hetarylmethylidene-4-sulfanylfuro[3,4-c]pyridin-3-ones were accessed from 4-thioxo-4,5-dihydrofuro[3,4-c]pyridin-3(1H)-one employing a condensation reaction with heteroaromatic aldehydes followed by thioalkylation, but not vice versa. Alkylation of 1-hetarylmethylidene-6-methyl-4-thioxo-4,5-dihydrofuro[3,4-c]pyridin-3-ones in an alkaline medium proceeded regioselectively at the sulfur atom to form sulfanyl derivatives.
