Abstract: HZSM-5 zeolites modified by zinc or gallium oxides were investigated using highly sensitive diffuse reflectance IR and ESR spectroscopic methods. Modification resulted in formation of strong Lewis acidic sites. For Zn-containing pentasils the Lewis acid-base pairs of Zn-O type localized in the channels were found to be the centres of strong polarization of H-H and C-H bonds as well as the active sites for dehydrogenation and aromatization of saturated hydrocarbons. In Ga-modified zeolites the strong Lewis acidic sites were localized on the external surface of microcrystallites.
