Abstract:
This review was inspired by the recent increase in interest in sulfur-nitrogen heterocycles. Five-membered sulfur-nitrogen heterocycles such as 1,2,3-thiadiazoles, 1,2,5-thiadiazoles, 1,2,3-dithiazoles and 1,3,2-dithiazoles fused with benzene and heterocycles are of particular importance, while exhaustive reviews on their synthesis are missing. Though each class of these heterocycles has its own unique features, there are universal methods for the annulation of sulfur-nitrogen heterocycles, and it was the objective of this review to identify these methods. Both the most popular and new or unexpected methods for the synthesis of sulfur-nitrogen heterocycles are considered. The existing or potential applications of these heterocycles are summarized, especially in materials science and in biomedicine.
