Abstract: In recent years, there has been a growing interest in polycyclic compounds containing 1,2,5-thia- and 1,2,5-selenadiazole rings. Some methods for their synthesis, such as the Körner-Hinsberg reaction, have been studied for decades, while others, such as Cadogan-type reductive condensation and the dimerization of fused thiadiazoles, have been developed in recent years. The Stille and Suzuki cross-coupling reactions are of particular interest for the extension of conjugation, in which significant advances have also been achieved. However, no effort has been made to summarize and analyze the evolving data. This review aims to assemble the available information and discuss the considerable potential for application of these structures, particularly in new areas such as photodynamic and photothermal cancer therapy, non-fullerene acceptors in solar cells, and NIR-2 dyes.
