Abstract:
The adsorption of light hydrocarbons (CH4, C2H6) and carbon dioxide on UiO-66 and MOF-808 metal–organic frameworks (MOF) based on Zr4+, Hf4+, and Ce4+ ions was systematically studied. The influence of the nature of the metal center on the physicochemical properties of the frameworks as well as on their adsorption performance was studied. It was shown that at elevated pressure, MOF-808 materials exhibit higher adsorption capacities than UiO-66. For both frameworks containing different metal ions, the adsorption capacities for all studied gases increase in the order Zr4+ ≥ Hf4+ > Ce4+, which may be attributed to differences in specific surface area and porosity. Despite the trend observed for adsorption capacities, the IAST selectivity values for CO2/CH4 and C2H6/CH4 gas pairs showed no clear dependencies on the nature of the metal ions. Based on the results of the general analysis of adsorption data and IAST calculations, it was shown that zirconium-based frameworks have the highest capacity and selectivity in the separation of hydrocarbons.
