Using the arylthiodeamination of aminobisthiophenols BnN[CH2C6H3(3-R)(2-SH)]2, where R = H (1a) or Ph (1b), with Lappert’s tetrylenes M[N(SiMe3)2]2 (M = Ge, Sn), four new tetrylenes BnN[CH2C6H3(3-R)(2-S)]2M (M = Ge (2a,b), Sn (3a,b); R = H (a), Ph (b)) were synthesized. Compounds 2a,b are first representatives of germylenes based on SNS-type ligands. The structures of the new tetrylenes were confirmed by 1H NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. All synthesized tetrylenes are monomeric. The solid-state structure of germylene 2a was established by X-ray diffraction. The electronic structures of compounds 2b and 3a were studied by cyclic voltammetry and UV spectroscopy. It was shown that, unlike non-activated germylenes, which do not undergo the electrochemical reduction, stannylenes are relatively easily reduced in the accessible potential range. The reaction of compound 2a with copper(I) iodide affords the complex [Cu(BnN[CH2C6H3(3-R)(2-S)]2Ge)3I] (4). The structure of complex 4 was determined by X-ray diffraction. Compound 4 is the first example of copper(I) complexes containing three tetrylene molecules as ligands.
