The reaction of Lappert's stannylene, Sn[N(SiMe3)2]2, with novel sterically hindered 2,6-bis(2-hydroxyphenyl)pyridine ligands bearing trimethylsilyl (1a) or triphenylsilyl (1b) groups yielded the corresponding stannylene complexes 2a and 2b The molecular structures of both complexes were determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. While complex 2b adopts a monomeric structure in the solid state, complex 2a forms a centrosymmetric dimer stabilized by an unusually long and weak intermolecular Sn···Sn contact (3.6817(4) Å). NMR spectroscopy confirmed the monomeric structure of both compounds in solution. The electrochemical and UV/Vis properties of the stannylenes were investigated, revealing a significant solvent-dependent behavior. A topological analysis of the electron density (QTAIM) within the framework of Bader's "Atoms in Molecules" theory was performed to elucidate the nature of the non-covalent interactions that stabilize the dimer of 2a.
