Abstract:
Photophysical properties of luminescent azahelicenes of the furoquinoline series have been studied by UV spectroscopy, time-resolved luminescence and laser flash photolysis. At sufficiently high (up to 37%) values of quantum luminescence yields, these compounds have very high photostability, despite significant (10–15%) quantum yields of intersystem crossing. Protonation of azahelicenes by the addition of trifluoroacetic acid leads to a bathochromic shift of the absorption (30–50 nm) and luminescence (60–85 nm) bands. Compounds with optimal characteristics may be of interest as laser media and acid sensors.
