Abstract: The performance of an energetic material in a final composition and device is not solely dependent on the performance of the discrete energetic molecules within. While one major route of improving energetic performance is to increase the performance of the discrete molecules within, the non-energetic materials mixed with the energetic molecule in the formulation offer another method of improving the performance of the formulation by the replacement of the inert binders and plasticizers with more energetic compounds. Current final energetic formulations can have tens of percent of “dead weight” through the use of inert binders and plasticizers and the replacement of these with energetic versions that accomplish the same function is a promising route of improving the overall performance of the composition. In this chapter, we review the advances in energetic polymers since 2010.
