Abstract: It was found that the promotion of Co/Al2O3 catalysts prepared by impregnation with the oxide MgO or TiO2 decreased or increased the reducibility of cobalt, respectively. Both of the promoters decreased the specific activity of the catalyst in the synthesis of hydrocarbons from CO and H2; this fact can be explained by the formation of larger cobalt crystallites on the surface. The promotion with MgO and TiO2 led to the formation of higher molecular weight hydrocarbons. The highest 86% selectivity for C5+ hydrocarbons was reached on the catalyst containing 1% TiO2, and the chain growth index on this catalyst was 0.88.
