Abstract: HZSM-5 zeolites dealuminated under mild and severe hydrothermal conditions were studied using diffuse reflectance i.r. spectroscopy. It was shown that dependent on the treatment conditions different types of acidic sites (up to five) appear because of formation of nonframework aluminum. Most of these species represented hydroxylated fragments with acid strength lower than that of bridged hydroxyls. It was shown that only a small portion of nonframework aluminum species exhibited properties of Lewis acid sites.
